Only so much money to go around, sorry 4K, no more left for you

OK, so we (Evansville school district property owners) are already averaging close to $4800 per year, with %40 of that going to our school district. I found it very distressing as I evaluated my property tax statement to see that the value of my home went DOWN, and the amount of school tax INCREASED by $300. NOW there is talk of adding a 4K. I see two issues with that 1. MONEY, 2. PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY. I'll address each. FIRST, I do agree that our children's' education is a very important to our nations future. However my father said to me while I was young, you cant spend money you don't have, basic accounting. With our State being $3.3 BILLION in debt, we as a community need to stop ignoring the 300 lbs gorilla and start being RESPONSIBLE. If our children are so far in debt that we have an economic melt down, our country/ state will take decades to fully recover, how do you think our education will look like then? SECOND, as a parent it is our responsibility to PARENT our children, and yes that includes spending some of your precious time TEACHING them important skills, like reading, talking, bathroom training, MANNERS, how to play, and communication. By adding a year to school in the beginning, you are taking away quality time with your child. This may offend some of you, but MAN UP, take responsibility for your creation, your decision to bring a child in to this world, the person that will be eventually be taking care of you when you are too old to do it for your self. I can not support adding 4K to our school for these two reasons, these economic times or any time for that matter, AND I believe it is our PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY to teach our children.

  1. 4800.00? Your home must be much nicer than mine. Yet I to am against 4k.

  2. Before they go adding 4k, they need to be able to pass the no child left behind with out any issues. If they are going to spend money they do not have, it needs to be for this.

Time is ticking, there is only two years? they have to shape up. If they do not they will lose federal funding, and then they will have even less money.

They need to prioritize and 4k needs to be on the bottom of the list.

I for one have no interest in paying for some one else's day care.

  3. I also do not know if you have kids or not. Have you ever met Heidi Carvin?

She is very stubborn, does not take no well. She has wanted 4k for years and this has just opened the door for her to try to push it through again.

The spring eviction is going to very important. I feel Dennis Hatfield is very good for the district, and does tell Heidi no.

How ever Kathy Swanson? Heidi's neighbor, and not so good at watching out for tax payers.

Losing Michael Pierick will be a huge loss for taxpayers. He was the biggest voice of reason on that board.

I ask if you have kids only because it's hard to know who is who if you don't have kids in the district.

  4. I do have children, and I was a substitute teacher for E-ville school district. The amount of tax we levy for our school is in the top 100 in the state in terms of percent of our property taxes. We were at 10.49 in 2010, and we will be paying 11.46 this year that will place us at 68th highest rate in the state. I think we need repeal that, cut some programs, and get this under control. People will be “taxed” out our community because they simply cannot afford to live here. The values of our homes are lowering and the amount of money going to the school is rising, doesn’t make sense.

  5. Are you running for school board? You seem to know more than the average joe, about the tax implications the district has levied on our bedroom community.

If you are not maybe you should think about it for next year.

  6. Hey Mavrik,

Maybe you should run.... Here's a few changes I would like to see above and beyond the 4k issue.

    1. Move the start times of the meetings so the average working Joe can attend.
    2. Someone who will fight for the taxpayers and stand up to the teachers union.
    3. No new borrowing until the High School is paid off. The Middle School loan will be paid off in 2012. You can bet your ass they will look to borrow for one reason or another.

  7. I have considered running, however to do it right I would need to research how much time it would take from my life and then evaluate whether I could devote that time to the community. Until then I will advocate what I think is right, and will be showing up to counsel meeting to voice my opinion and my concerns.

  8. Wow, a $4800 property tax bill in Evansville, WI? That must put your property value close to $300k. Which means if you followed the old rule of thumb and didn't buy a house out of your price range you have a household income of over $100k/year.

Just to put your position into scope, that means you are earning over double what the average American income is.

You earn triple the average income in Evansville, WI.

You earn more than any educator in the Evansville school district.

You are just shy (or possibly in) the top 5% of earners in the country.

So, you'll have to excuse me if I'm not shedding a tear for your "lost" $300.

-Rick (my appologies for posting anon, I was getting odd errors trying the other options)

  9. I think 4k ca be great in some very specific instances.
    1. For kids who could use some extra socialization in a really easy environment it worked great for us. However We used a parochial school (not thats that is better and no state funds)
    2. While it sounds great to get the kids learning earlier and studies show they do better right away by 1st grade all advancements in learning seem to have been negated (purely educational, they still do work and play better with others, especially really shy kids.
    3. I think the even better method would be groups of parent actually getting together on their own and fosterig the interaction, no only do you get the socialization you can see much more realistically where your child can improve.
    4. Time we stop expecting the system to do everything for our kids, no matter how good a teacher is I dont think they would ever be able to get the level or potential from a child their own parents could.....JMO

  10. Anon "Wow, a $4800 property tax bill in Evansville, WI? That must put your property value close to $300k" Form all those phony facts that you have quoted I could have easily mistaken you for an educated person, but let me show everyone how you are just making things up for how you think the world runs. FIRST $4,800 is for a $205,000 home (not to mention that I could not sell it for that today based on similar houses selling for less in the same neighborhood), so a small $95,000 error on your part clearly shows that you are a special one. SECOND. I built the majority of my home to keep the price with-in my salary range because that is what I could afford AND my first property bill was a FAR cry from what it is now. THIRD , I am in the military soooooooooo if you truly believe that we are making DOUBLE what the average American income and TRIPLE the average E-ville worker, then I have some ocean front property on East Main St to sell, interested? ON that same note the avg house hold income here in Evanville is $58,934, and the avg house hold income for America is $52,059, so your double triple comment was COMPLETLY made up. (hint, the goverment puts out those number EVERY YEAR, read a little, it will help you sound less dumb) FOURTH. I personally KNOW teachers right here in Evansville that make MUCH more than I do. And finally, “Top 5% earners in the country”? Please refer to my third rebuttal. You have no real idea what goes on in our community or country, you live in a dream world where everybody deserves everything handed to them for merely being born, and by the way, if $300 a month is not a big deal to you then feel free to mail me the $300 because it's a big deal for me.

  11. OH last thing, the avg property tax here in Evansville is $4244 for the avg home in evansville 181,288. You are one heck of a smart dude......
